| The missions of HKFRDD are: | |
| 1. | Establishment of scholarships and awards for both clinical and basic scientists in Hong Kong and Mainland China to conduct research in diabetes and related diseases. |

Qualigenics
Diabetes Centre was open in October 2002 as a technology transfer of
CUHK to GenRx, a subsidiary of HKR International, a public listed company
which funds the project entirely. This academic-industrial collaboration
aims to develop Qualigenics into a Medical Centre of Excellence in China
and Asia by creating a platform to promote sharing of best practices
focusing on disease prevention and education using a multidisciplinary
approach, targeting particularly at patients with chronic diseases,
notably, diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
Qualigenics has 2 Centres, one based at the CUHK School of Public Health located on the PWH Campus and the other at the Pier 3, Central District (opposite to International Financial Centre). In April 2005, to further increase the scope and quality of services provided at the Centre, CardioMed Heart Centre was formed under Qualigenics and is based at the Pier 3 Centre. Together, the 2 Centres employ a team of 22 members including endocrinologists, cardiologists, diabetes educators, pharmacists, nurses, physical trainers, dietitians, administrators and marketing personnel to provide a range of quality assured, convenient and affordable health care services through collaboration with other medical practitioners and health care workers in the community. |

| The forerunners
of DECP were the PWH Metabolic Investigation Unit established in 1985
by Professor Clive Cockram, Clinical Pharmacology Study Unit in 1989 by
late Professor Julian Critchley and Novo Nordisk Clinical Trial Centre
in 2001 by Dr. CC Chow.
Since early 1990s, members of these centres have conducted more than 30 phase 1-4 clinical trials in diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome in accordance to Good Clinical Practice supported by a large number of multinational companies. The DECP is now fully equipped to initiate, conduct and coordinate major studies in the field of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and endocrinology while at the same time provide the best of care to these patients under a structured protocol delivered by dedicated personnel. The Centre employs 4 doctors engaged mainly in clinical research, further supported by a team of dedicated and highly experienced research nurses and personnel. The Centre works in close partnership with the CUHK Centre for Clinical Trials and the CUHK Drug Development Centre to examine the safety, efficacy and tolerability of novel compounds as well as to evaluate their therapeutic potentials by conducting proof of concept studies for new indications. Senior members of the Centre are often members of the steering committee of landmark studies or members of advisory boards of novel compounds. The Centre has been inspected by the headquarters of major pharmaceutical companies including Novo Nordisk, MSD, Astra Zeneca and Sankyo as well as US-FDA and its equivalent in Japan. |
