Course Description

Required Courses

CVS5001 Basic Cardiology
The course will provide comprehensive coverage in basic anatomy, physiology, autonomic system, ECG interpretation, circulation control, molecular biology, endothelial function, hypertension, pregnancy, basic biostatistics and medical ethics.

CVS6001 Clinical Cardiology I
This part will cover heart failure, valvular heart disease, acute coronary disease and cardiomyopathy.

CVS6002 Clinical Cardiology II
This part will focus on cardiac arrhythmia, adult congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, risk stratification for non-cardiac surgery and management of cardiac emergency.

CVS7001 Clinical Seminar I
The seminar will be conducted in the form of problem-solving or case-based tutorial session. It will present cases employing an integrated cardiac approach which involves the use of various modalities of investigation and treatment.

CVS7002 Clinical Seminar II
The seminar will present the latest advances in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases. It will cover a broad spectrum of topics encompassing cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmia and device therapy, heart failure, coronary artery disease, interventional cardiology, echocardiography and cardiac imaging, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, cardiac and stroke rehabilitation, clinical trials as well as pharmacotherapy for various cardiac diseases.

CVS9001 Dissertation
A 5,000-word dissertation in the form of topical review is required for graduation.

Elective Courses

CVS8001 Cardiac Procedures
It will be illustrated by videos and introduces basic knowledge of various cardiac investigations and procedures, including basic techniques and precautions.

CVS8002 Clinical Attachment
The clinical attachment involves spending a week in rotation at the cardiac unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital. Students will acquire basic knowledge of the daily running and care of patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutics cardiac procedures.

Graduation Requirements

1. Satisfactory completion of all required courses and one elective course
2. At least 80% attendance of each course is required
3. Assignments and Examinations:
i Basic Cardiology (CVS5001)
- MCQ examination
ii Clinical Cardiology I (CVS6001) and Clinical Cardiology II (CVS6002)
- One case study report for each course
- MCQ examination for each course
4. A dissertation (CVS9001) in the form of topical review of about 5,000 words should be submitted at the end of Year 2
5. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
6. Students are required to pass the IT Proficiency Test before graduation
